An officer trying to help abandoned animals found their hands tied by the law and a naughty boy got his dad in trouble for using the toilet. We hit the highlights of the Portsmouth Police Chief’s Daily Briefing.
Suspicious Activity
- A woman waved down police in the 1800 block of Kendall Avenue. She told police she feared her husband was having a mental episode. Officers accompanied her to Big Lots to speak with the man. An officer said the man did not seem to require any emergency mental health care but he was advised about treatment options.
- Just after 3 pm, a caller reported finding a safe near the tracks on Harding Street. The safe had been forced open and he feared it may have been stolen. Police discovered the safe had been there for several months and could not find any theft reports related to the safe.
Shots Reported on Coles Blvd
Two separate callers reported possible shots fired on Coles Blvd. just after 1:30 am. Officers received permission to search one resident but didn’t find anything suspicious.
They searched the area for about half an hour but were unable to find any evidence of a shooting.
This Property is Condemned
- Just before 2 am, an officer investigated a report of loud people on the porch of a condemned house on Grant Street. Police arrested a woman with an open warrant from the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office.
- At 8:17 am, police responded to Linden Avenue for a report of people living on the porch of an abandoned house. Officers noted the door in the back was open and that the home is extremely unsafe. They contacted code enforcement.
Helping Hand
A man waved down an officer just before 3 am to ask for directions and a phone to call his mom for a ride.
Police helped the guy arrange transportation and dropped him at the Marathon on the Scioto Trail to wait for a ride from his mom.
Lost and Found
Police located a vehicle stolen from the department’s impound lot just after 10 am. Officers towed it back to the lot.
Tot Tattles on Dad for Using the Toilet
A very naughty 5-year-old caused a panic around 3 pm. He to said he and his siblings were home alone. When police arrived, they found kids aged three, five, and six in the home. Their father was also there.
Turns out the five-year-old was fibbing. Dad was actually just using the bathroom. Mom arrived home while the police were there. Officers said reports of endangered kids were unfounded.
Animals Abandoned on Brunner, Officer Unable To Help
A concerned Brunner Avenue neighbor called the police just after 7 pm. They reported a man moved away and left three cats and two dogs alone without food or water and that the house had no heat or electricity.
The officer could hear at least one dog inside the home but could not make contact with anyone inside. But since a dog is considered property under the law, the officer could not enter the house.
The officer contacted animal control and Code Enforcement.
