COVID Hits Schools In Scioto County, Ohio

Scioto County, Ohio EMA Director Larry Mullins said there are positive COVID-19 cases and quarantines at multiple school districts in Scioto County.
Affected districts include:
  • Wheelersburg
  • Minford
  • Valley
  • Scioto County Career Technical Center (SCCTC)

Minford Superintendent Jeremy Litteral said the student who tested positive had not attended school yet in the building. The student had only been for a health screening and not been in contact with any other kids in the school.

Cases Must Be Reported

Governor MikeDeWine said last week that all of Ohio’s K-12 schools must put in place a process that allows parents to report cases of the virus. Schools are required to make information about these cases public as quickly as they can.

The governor said the goal is to ensure:

  • Parents are notified if their kids have been in contact with someone COVID19 positive.
  • Parents are notified if someone in their child’s building is COVID19 positive.
  • The public is aware of cases in their local districts.

School districts are required to report a positive test by staff members or students to their local health department immediately. Local health departments will pass that information onto the Ohio Department of Health each week.

The districts are required to notify all parents and guardians in the district about the positive virus cases. While they are not permitted to disclose protected health information, they should disclose as much information as possible.

Information On District Websites

Mullins said Sandy Mers, Superintendent of the South Central Ohio ESC, assured him most school districts in Scioto County already have this type of information on their school’s website. She also said that soon all districts will post this information online.

Where that information is posted depends on how the district’s websites are set up. Mullins urged parents to check with their local district for more information.

The Scioto County COVID-19 case count jumped by 14 on Wednesday. However, Mullins said the surge in cases wasn’t linked to schools opening back up. Instead, it’s connected to the COVID outbreak at the Best Care Nursing Home in Wheelersburg.  So far,

All of Scioto County’s school districts are doing everything possible to make their respective schools safe for the students and staff during the COVID19 outbreak. According to the state, the facility has experienced 52 total cases. Of those, 35 are active.
