There’s a new Kroger giveaway scam going around that could wreck your phone or computer if you fall for it. It’s been popping up all over Facebook.
The scam post how claims that it’s a Post-Christmas giveaway, but previous versions have claimed to be a Christmas giveaway or a Thanksgiving Giveaway.
The scammers say you can win free groceries for a year by sharing their posts and taking a quick quiz. When you see something that claims everyone who shares a post gets something for nothing, warning bells should go off. How could Kroger afford to give potentially 200 million people in the U.S. free groceries for a full year? What really happens is that you click on a link that takes you to what looks like a survey. The only question for the survey is “Would you like free groceries for a year.”
By the time you read that survey, you may have already downloaded malware onto your computer or phone. Sites like this are simply traps to trick you into clicking where you shouldn’t. Those buttons on the survey could really be giving permission to downloaded unwanted programs onto your device.
In a statement on Twitter, the Kroger company said:
“We are aware of this fraudulent page and are working to address this matter. We recommend not engaging with the posting, and we appreciate your patronage.”
