Will Lawrence County become Second Amendment Sanctuary?

Lawrence County Commissioners are addressing calls for the county to become a Second Amendment Sanctuary. A Second Amendment Sanctuary is a community that adopts laws that prohibit enforcing state or federal laws that are perceived to be contrary to the Constitutional right to keep and bear arms spelled out in the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. Examples of such laws could include background checks, ‘assault weapons’ bans, and red flag laws.

The commissioners say they have received over 100 messages from citizens concerning the possibility of Lawrence County joining Meigs County as the only other community Ohio in adopting such a resolution.

So far, four states and hundreds of counties and local communities across the country have declared themselves to be Second Amendment sanctuaries.  There have been questions over whether such laws would stand up in a higher court.

The commissioners say they strive to be responsive to all citizens and make thoughtful decisions. But point out that “We’re bound to follow the laws of the State of Ohio, but also to balance that obligation with seeking the will of our County residents.”

They say it’s important for all citizens to have a voice in the legislative process and they will consider all input and then “Construct the proper pathway to move forward through the most appropriate actions. We will need some process time to ensure we do what is best for all.”
