Letter to the Editor: Scioto County needs J.D. Vance in the U.S. Senate

On May 3rd, Republicans in Ohio will vote to determine who the party’s nominee for U.S. Senate will be. For Scioto County GOP voters, the choice is clear: J.D. Vance.

J.D. Vance is a Trump-endorsed conservative outsider, an accomplished businessman, a prolific author, a family man, and a U.S. Marine. You may have heard of his memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, which was adapted into a movie by Netflix in 2020. In the book, Vance chronicles his upbringing in the rust-belt town of Middletown, Ohio, and he details his mother’s struggles with opioid addiction.

J.D.’s story is all too familiar for the people of Scioto County. For decades we’ve battled the opioid crisis, and we’ve certainly made progress in our fight. But moving forward, it’s important that we send leaders to Washington that understands the fight against opioid addiction—not politicians who are in the pockets of pharmaceutical corporations.

J.D. Vance is the only candidate for U.S. Senate that has extensively addressed this issue on the campaign trail. He’s visited Scioto County on at least three occasions over the past few months to talk with members of our community about the issues we face, and in each visit, he has discussed the opioid crisis with citizens who have been impacted.

In a recent TV ad released by Vance, he expresses his support for finishing President Trump’s border wall in order to stop the “poison” coming across our southern border, and he shares about how he almost lost his mother to addiction. J.D.’s discussion of this issue on the television airwaves goes to show just how much he cares about ending this crisis.

Vance’s strength in advocating for solutions to addiction and the influx of drugs into our country isn’t the only reason we should vote for him. Over the years, he has extensively detailed the industrial decline in the United States, and he emphasizes that our leaders have done absolutely nothing to stop corporations from shipping American jobs—jobs that lifted thousands of Scioto County residents out of poverty—to other countries like Mexico and China.

Early voting is underway at the Scioto County courthouse, and Election Day is on May 3rd. It’s time we elect people that will put America first and represent the everyday workers and citizens that make our country great. I hope you will join me in voting for J.D. Vance for U.S. Senate.
