A six-year-old child was caught n the middle of an ugly dispute between the adults in its life.

Just after 2 pm, police received a report from an upset dad who was attempting to take custody of his 6-year-old child. The man had court paperwork from Michigan showing that he has had full custody of the child since 2021. He arrived in town with his girlfriend to take the child home, but the child’s mother was not willing to return the child after he allowed it to visit for the summer.

Officers spoke with the mother, who did not have any paperwork showing that she had visitation rights.

Police said that while they spoke to the parents, the father’s girlfriend was yelling from their Jeep and escalating the situation.

Officers said when the dad picked up the child to put it in the vehicle, the mom tried to take the child from the father, and an officer had to intervene. Then the girlfriend got out of the Jeep and began running towards them. At that point, the mom went after the girlfriend. The two got into a mutual fight that police managed to break up before anyone was injured.

Officers briefly detained both women and warned them that they would arrest them if they didn’t calm down. Officers calmed the situation down and advised the mother to file for custody if she wanted to change their arrangement.
