A New Boston Police Officer had a wild first day on the job last Friday that ended with a felony arrest. These are strange days in the village and the NBPD is speaking out about how they’re coping. Plus, we’ve got an exciting video of the arrest.
New Boston Police Officers are reminding citizens that first responders don’t have the option to stay at home during a pandemic.
They’re sharing photos that show the reality of life on the streets in what public officials are often calling “unprecedented times.”
Protected from more than the disease
It turns out that PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) not only protects you from viruses, but it can also save you from other hazards on the jobs.
These pictures show two NBPD Officers, Landon Hutchinson and Trever McKenzie, who obviously heard Dr. Amy Acton’s call to don face masks to protect themselves and others.
The department also displayed the type of safety equipment the Village gives to officers.

- Gloves
This gear is nothing new to officers because of the epidemic of fentanyl abuse in our area. Fentanyl is an especially deadly substance that can cause an overdose if you just touch it. According to the NBPD:
About 85% of the drugs NBPD seizes has a mixture of fentanyl in the drugs which can cause possible death to anyone who consumes it or comes into contact with it.
But now this gear can also be used to protect police from COVID-19.
You Never Know When Drugs Will Turn Up
Officers never know when drugs will turn up, either. Last Friday an NBPD officer was called to Glenwood Avenue with some assistance from the Portsmouth Police Department. They thought it was for a domestic violence call.
They arrested Dustin Gash, 33. But when they conducted a search they found a baggie with a large amount of crystal meth.
When the grand jury opens back up for business, that case will be presented.
Busy First Day on the Job
Officer Landon Hutchinson had a busy first day on the job with NBPD.
A crook who obviously hadn’t heard about the stay-at-home order made off with a pizza delivery guy’s wheels earlier in the week.
NBPD officers got a call from Papa John’s reporting that one of their delivery drivers had left a car running with the keys in the ignition out in front of the restaurant. The driver also left his wallet and all of his tip money in the car. No surprise, someone quickly hopped in and took off. The Scioto County Sheriff’s Office and the Highway Patrol helped NBPD track the vehicle down.
Officers found the vehicle at a Kulp Road home. When police approached the vehicle, the suspect, later identified as Shannon Johnston, 41, from Ross County, took off running towards the woods.
Officer Landon Hutchinson chased the suspect down and took him into custody with help from Captain Deerfield.

The stolen vehicle was recovered undamaged. And so was the wallet and tip money. (That driver should take a dollar out of the tip money to get a lotto ticket. It was clearly their lucky day.)
The collar was Officer Hutchinson’s very first arrest. And a felony to boot!
