‘Not Possible’ to Know Number of COVID-19 Tests

There’s no way to know exactly how many COVID-19 tests have been performed in Scioto County according to the County’s top doc. But Scioto County EMA confirms that one of those cases is at a Wheelersburg nursing home.

The case is associated with the Best Care Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility. No further information was available.

The local official Coronavirus case count remains low compared to some parts of Ohio. Just across Ohio’s Northern border in Detroit, the COVID-19 body count is so high that emergency room staff resorted to putting bodies in chairs because they ran out of room. So far we’ve been spared, or so it seems.

Scioto County Health Department Commissioner Dr. Mike Martin expressed frustration yesterday at the lack of testing and the lack of communication about testing. He said that the press found about the last diagnosed case of COVID in the county before the Health Department did.

Here’s a look a the current numbers for Scioto County and our surrounding neighbors:

Scioto County:

  • Cases – 4
  • Deaths – 0

Scioto County has performed approximately 475 tests. Martin says it’s impossible to know exactly.

It is not possible for the Health Department to give a correct number for various reasons. The hospitals test persons from all over the tri-state area. We receive negative results only from the hospitals in our jurisdiction, SOMC and KDMC. All other test sites only send positive results.

He went on to say that just because samples are taken at the same time, it doesn’t mean they will be processed at the same time. They could be sent to various sites for testing.

The most number of cases in our region is Lawrence County.

Lawrence County:

  • Cases – 17
  • Deaths – 0

Two people have recovered enough to leave isolation.

Adams County:

Jackson County

Across the Ohio River in Kentucky, there are a few cases in Greenup County with significantly more in Boyd.

Greenup County

  • Cases – 8
  • Deaths – 0

According to the Greenup County Health Department, 341 tests have been performed.

Boyd County

  • Cases – 25
  • Deaths – 2
  • Recoveries – 7

The Ashland-Boyd County Health Department says 612 tests have been performed.
