Proving that there’s so much more to law enforcement than writing tickets or handcuffing crooks, PPD officers convinced a man with rotting legs to finally get medical attention before it’s too late. In less serious news, they also dealt with a woman who really, really loves her phone charger. We break down the highlights of the Portsmouth Police Chief’s Daily Briefing.
Man With A Gun
Just after midnight, officers responded to a report of a man with a gun at a Gallia Street address.
Three units responded. Police took a man into custody.
Where’s My Money?
An irate Speedway customer claimed an employee stole $1700 just before 1 am. She told police she thought an employee took her money at the counter.
Officers were not able to view the security video but that manager said they would show the officers the video when they got in at 5 a.m.
The woman later came back to the store and said she found the missing money in her car.
She Really Liked That Charger
A woman contacted police at 2:15 am to report a missing cell phone charger. She told police her ex came for a visit and then texted her saying he accidentally took her charger and inquired if she wanted it back.
Police suggested she go get the charger but she wanted to file a criminal complaint. She also listed her ex’s character flaws and said his family was involved in criminal activity. Since the incident happened out in the county, police suggested she contact the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office.
Parking Crackdown
- At 6:42 am, PPD continued their parking crackdown by citing a vehicle on Wayne Avenue for parking in a handicapped space. An officer also cited the vehicle for fictitious tags. Police impounded the vehicle and arranged for a tow.
- An hour later, a tow truck hooked up another vehicle on Gallia for a 72-hour parking violation.
- Officers cited a Munn Street vehicle for tags that expired 2 years ago. Police arranged to have it towed.
- Police gave the owner of a camper one hour to move it from a 7th Street address and tagged 3 junk cars without tags at 9:51. An officer also spoke to the resident of the home about the condition of the property.
Mad Mom
Officers responded to a call about a mom causing trouble at her kids’ school. The school barred the woman from the property. The school said she threatened to slap a staff member.
An officer attempted to give the woman a school bus schedule but she refused to take it. Police told her she must use the bus or have someone else pick up and drop off her children.
The angry mom threatened to go live on Facebook with the situation or to switch schools.
Officers Help Man With Rotting Legs
PPD officers attempted to intervene in a dangerous medical situation. A man’s legs were in such poor condition that officers said they could smell the dead tissue from outside the home.
The man’s father and girlfriend said he would not go to the hospital. He initially refused police offers to call for EMS. Officers noted that his legs were wrapped in gauze and infection had clearly seeped through the bandages.
Police said the man had active warrants but told the man they would not arrest him due to his medical condition. Instead, they told him to call the courts and make arrangements when he’s in better physical condition.
An officer stood by until the man took care of those issues and agreed to leave with his family for the hospital.
Under The Influence
- At 6:55 pm, police responded to a report of an overdose at the Woodbine Apartments. Police took the man into custody.
- A Vinton Avenue caller reported two apparently high men in the alley at 7:39 pm. Police could not locate the men.
Jumped and Bleeding
Officers responded to Farley Court for a report of an assault at 7:55 pm. A woman told police 2 women jumped her. She was bleeding and had knots on her head.
Police dispatched an ambulance and took a report.
