PPD had a heck of a time finding help for a mentally ill man they’ve already arrested almost 50 times plus a troubled teen at the Taco Bell. We hit the highlights of the Portsmouth Police Chief’s Daily Briefing.
Help Hard To Find For Mentally Ill Man
Just before 1:30 am, a caller reported an apparently high man waving his arms at 7th and Court Street. When officers arrived on the scene, they found a mentally ill man with whom they have nearly daily contact. He’s already been arrested 48 times, twice in the past two weeks. Police didn’t think he was intoxicated and told him to be quiet.
At 4:37 am, a caller said he heard a man calling for help. Police checked out the area. They determined it was likely the man from the previous call.
Three hours later witnesses reported an apparently high shirtless man wearing only shorts on Gay Street. Once again they spoke to the man from the earlier call. He informed them he was due in court shortly. They advised him to stay quiet until then.
At 5 pm, a caller reported a shirtless man in shorts dancing in the street on 11th Street. Officers discovered it was the same man from previous calls. They took him into custody and attempted to place him in the hospital for mental treatment.
The hospital told police they had no room for him due to other psych patients and he would have to remain in the hall. They also said the man could not be admitted to a psychiatric facility.
Welfare Check
At 2 am, a caller asked police to check out the Franklin Avenue home of a recently deceased man. They noted his elderly sister’s car parked there and were worried she was still in the house which had no electricity.
An officer knocked on the door but didn’t get an answer. They didn’t see anything suspicious.
Hey! That’s My Stuff
A woman contacted police at 9:42 am to request a theft of medication form. She’d been arrested for drug possession earlier in the day and was advised of the consequences of filing a false police report.
A Timmonds Avenue caller reported an attempted house break-in just after 4 pm. Police took information for a report.
Unexpected Tenants
Police were called to Ritchie Street for a report of people in a home that was currently in probate. The tenants said they had rented the home from someone in Florida.
Runaway Teen
A worried Wayne Avenue parent reported their teenage daughter left home two days ago and had yet to return.
You Can Run But You Can Hide
Just after noon, a driver with expired tags tried to avoid police by speeding up, pulling into a private drive, and proceeding to switch drivers.
The officer still issued citations to the driver for driving under suspension and expired tags.
Dirty Words
A Highland Avenue caller contacted police at 2:30 pm to report that someone spray-painted vulgar words on his sidewalk and trash can.
He wanted the incident documented in case the city said something about the trash can.
Troubled Teen at the Taco Bell
Officers were called to the Taco Bell on Gallia at 3:12 pm for a report of a man having an issue with his 16-year-old stepson. He claimed the boy threatened him.
The teen left with his girlfriend before officers arrived.
