An area school halted sports practices after a student was diagnosed with COVID-19. Scioto County also reported a new positive case of COVID-19.

Total Number

That brings the total number of cases to 36. Fifteen men and 21 women have tested positive. Only six of them required hospitalization. Out of the 36, 22 patients have recovered. There have been no COVID-19 related deaths in Scioto County.

The number of COVID-19 cases in the county nearly doubled in the past 10 days.

Ohio’s numbers stand at:

  • Cases – 52,865
  • Hospitalizations – 7,911
  • Deaths – 2,876

Practices Halted

Greenup County reported another additional case -a 25-year-old man. He is on home isolation.

That brings the County’s total to 28. The county reported that half of those patients are recovered.

A Russell Independent School System student tested positive for COVID-19. As a result, Superintendent Dr. M. Sean Horne ordered two athletic programs to stop practices for 14 days.

In a statement, Dr. Horne said he’d been in contact with health officials.  The superintendent said the district was following their instructions. “I know that all of us are wishing for a swift recovery for our Russell Student.”

Four Prison Employees Positive

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections reported that there are still four employees of the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility (SOCF) that have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.

SOCF has 10 inmates in quarantine and 2 inmates awaiting test results.

COVID Numbers Climb

The number of COVID-19 cases in Ohio and around the country spiked sharply in the past few days.  Governor Mike DeWine expressed concern on Monday. He said that experts think the growing number of cases are not linked to expanded testing.

Officials at Put-In-Bay said that eight visitors to the Lake Erie island tested positive for COVID-19. All visited the tourist spot over Father’s Day weekend.  Scioto County Health Commissioner, Dr. Michael Martin, linked some of our county’s new cases to recent visits to COVID-19 hotspots like Myrtle and Daytona beaches.
