Walmart Pays Portsmouth $10,000

Walmart has paid the city of Portsmouth for the hazardous material spilled on Nov 30th near the water treatment plant. During a crash on State Route 52, a semi-tractor trailer belonging to Walmart struck a dividing wall. This caused the spill of diesel fuel into a nearby storm drain.

Larry Mullins, Scioto EMA Director, presented the check to Mayor Sean Dunne. According to Mullins, the total damage and expenses for responding jurisdictions exceeded $59,000.

For its part, Portsmouth submitted its expenses to assist in this spill. Among these services were police, firefighters, and city services. Through these negotiations, a check was collected for $10,648.17 and was given to the city.

Portsmouth City Council also approved the acceptance of all grant monies made available to the Portsmouth Police Department for equipment purchases and a large grant to be spent on employment retention bonuses. The total of all grants received was $343,217.68.

Laura Davis is the grant writer for the Police Department and was responsible for helping secure those funds.
